Streamlined Outage Response

Challenge

A propane & oil company sought to improve the productivity of its fuel delivery personnel and field technicians. Their existing mobile devices couldn’t keep pace with the increased performance or reliability required.

Solution

The energy company selected the Panasonic TOUGHBOOK G2 fully rugged tablet due to the superior computing power and long battery life, both in vehicle and out in the field, while withstanding tough terrain and weather.

Results

They increased efficiency in the field by automating the delivery process, improving customer service, and in turn, improving their bottom line.

Challenge

A transformer at a remote substation begins overheating, threatening a potential outage and requiring fast, coordinated response from multiple teams to minimize disruption.

Solution

A thermal camera alerts management. A technician is dispatched, and a customer mass notification is sent. LPR and access control confirm technician entry. Body cams capture the process, and work orders are updated in real time.

Results

The repair is completed quickly and securely, with full transparency, verified technician access, and proactive customer communication at every step, minimizing downtime and strengthening community trust.

Challenge

A public power utility district operates across more than 5,000 sq .miles and serves over 400,000 customers, facing exponentially increasing electricity demand. To support its digital transformation, the company needed to replace outdated consumer-grade hardware that enabled a shift from paper-based processes to digital workflows.

Solution

They deployed 200 TOUGHBOOK 55 units across various operational teams to serve as the core fieldwork devices, including meter technicians, line crews, troubleshooters, and system automation teams. The teams benefited from rugged durability, daylight-readable screens, backward compatibility with legacy systems, and rich connectivity to support GIS access, dispatch, and operational tools.

Results

Since deploying TOUGHBOOK 55 devices, field teams experienced substantial gains in accuracy and efficiency: personnel could receive work orders, access real-time GIS data, conduct digital inspections, and log information in one integrated device. This streamlined outage response, reduced IT burdens and supported the utility’s transition to a digitally driven operation.

FAQs

Our goal is to make working with us as seamless as possible — start here for quick answers to commonly asked questions on utilities solutions.
What TOUGHBOOK is best for utility companies?

Use BAYCOM’s “Find Your TOUGHBOOK Solution” tool to identify the right rugged laptop or tablet based on your agency’s use cases, connectivity requirements, and mounting needs. From incident reporting to CAD access, we’ll help you find the right fit.

How do TOUGHBOOKs support field service and inspections?

Panasonic TOUGHBOOK laptops and tablets are ideal for utility crews working in remote or rugged environments. They’re drop-tested, weather-resistant, glove-operable, and support critical applications like GIS mapping, SCADA monitoring, work orders, and digital inspections — whether on a pole, in a truck, or at a substation.

Can TOUGHBOOKs be mounted in utility trucks or service vehicles?

Yes. BAYCOM offers vehicle mounting solutions for TOUGHBOOKs used in bucket trucks, vans, and trailers. These setups allow field crews to input data, access schematics, complete inspections, or connect to dispatch systems, all while staying mobile and productive.

What communication tools do utility crews rely on most?

Motorola Solutions two-way radios are the backbone of field communications. They offer rugged durability, GPS tracking, private channels, and man-down features to ensure reliable voice communication between crews, dispatch, and emergency response teams.

How do BAYCOM’s systems support storm response and outage recovery?

During large-scale weather events or grid disruptions, our systems provide GPS tracking, wide-area voice coverage, and real-time data to help dispatchers coordinate rapid, safe recovery efforts and restore service faster.

Can BAYCOM help unify voice, data, and video systems for utilities?

Yes. BAYCOM builds integrated platforms that bring together voice communication, surveillance, asset tracking, and SCADA feeds that are accessible from a central command center for greater operational oversight and faster incident response.

What type of network infrastructure is best for utilities?

Utilities require reliable and redundant infrastructure. BAYCOM designs secure wired, wireless, and LTE-enabled networks that support voice, video, telemetry, and IoT across substations, service centers, and remote infrastructure.

Are BAYCOM radios compatible with existing utility dispatch systems?

Yes. BAYCOM radio solutions integrate with most utility dispatch systems and support analog, digital, or hybrid environments, allowing seamless communication between field techs, control centers, and contracted teams.

Can BAYCOM support system-wide deployments across large utility territories?

Absolutely. BAYCOM scales solutions for county-wide or statewide coverage using high-power repeaters, LTE fallback, or point-to-point microwave to ensure even remote substations remain online and in contact.

Does BAYCOM offer security systems for substations and service yards?

Yes. BAYCOM deploys video surveillance, intrusion alerts, access control, and license plate recognition (LPR) to secure critical infrastructure, monitor unmanned locations, and reduce theft or vandalism.
