Dragon Law Enforcement: Spend less time on paperwork and more time keeping communities safe

Police officers can spend an hour or more typing up a single incident report. For sergeants, paperwork can consume up to 45 percent of the workday. Heavy documentation demands can impact the timely filing of reports, limit community visibility, and even put their safety at risk.

To alleviate much of that burden, Nuance has just introduced Dragon Law Enforcement, a voice-to-text solution that provides officers with a faster and more accurate way to safely and efficiently improve daily reporting and documentation demands, speed data entry into CAD/RMS systems and perform everyday tasks.

Improve accuracy.

Although voice-to-text solutions have been on the market for some time, speech recognition accuracy has improved greatly in recent years, according to BAYCOM Director of Business Development Tim Cooney.

“This Dragon technology is 99 percent accurate, and will even recognize voices and accents. In Minneapolis, for example, there are a number of Somali officers who have pretty thick accents and this technology can be set up to recognize those nuances,” he said. “Plus, it’s built to include words and phrases often used by law enforcement, such as car and truck makes and models and other unique terms. Custom words or word lists can also be added if a department uses particular names or terminology with a high degree of frequency.”

Save time.

Because officers simply speak to create detailed and accurate incident reports, Dragon is three times faster than typing.

“Even the buttons on the microphone allow them to tab and quickly space through their reports,” added Cooney. “They can either push the button or use a command to move from field to field. And as a result, they spend less time in their car or back at the station tethered to a computer and more time on patrol keeping communities safe.”

Enhance in-car safety.

For officers that do create reports while stationary in their squad cars, situational awareness is critical.  With voice recognition, they no longer need to be ‘heads down’ typing or writing out a report by hand. Instead, they can look up license plates, write reports and respond to calls with their voice—staying heads up with their eyes on their surroundings.

Extend investments in existing vehicle docks.

Dragon Law Enforcement is compatible with existing Panasonic TOUGHBOOK® vehicle docks. Available accessories for the Panasonic TOUGHBOOK 33 include two distinct vehicle docks for new deployments as well as an innovative vehicle dock adapter which allows drop-in placement onto any Panasonic TOUGHBOOK 31 vehicle dock, saving time and resources.

Eliminate or reduce transcription time and costs.

Because Dragon is configured to automatically fill in report fields as the user speaks, agencies can reduce dependence on transcription services.
