70 Years of BAYCOM: A Lifeline in the Moments That Matter Since 1956

Updated - September 17, 2026

In 1956, BAYCOM got its start in the basement of its founder’s Green Bay home as a two-way radio repair shop and dealer.

Seventy years later, BAYCOM has grown into a communications and security technology partner with approximately 100 employees helping organizations across the Midwest communicate, connect, and protect their people.

A lot has changed in those seven decades. The technology has evolved. Our capabilities have expanded. The organizations we serve have grown far beyond our early public safety roots. But the responsibility at the heart of BAYCOM has remained the same: when people depend on the technology we provide, it has to work.

It Started with Two-Way Radio

Two-way radio built the foundation of BAYCOM. On September 12, 1956, Tom Pohlman signed a service agreement for two-way radios with Motorola Solutions, and we have never turned back.

From the beginning, public safety was an important part of our work. In fact, the Green Bay Police Department was one of BAYCOM’s very first customers in 1956 — and remains a customer today, relying on BAYCOM for two-way radios and rugged TOUGHBOOK mobile computers.

“For decades, BAYCOM has been a trusted partner for our emergency communications technology needs, which is a critical component of our operations,” says Green Bay Chief of Police Chris Davis.

That relationship is one of many that reflects BAYCOM’s deep roots in public safety. Today, we work with police departments, fire departments, EMS, state patrol and other first responders across more than 25 states.

But as technology changed, BAYCOM changed with it.

Evolving Beyond the Radio

What began with two-way communications has grown into a much broader approach to communication, safety and security.

Over the years, BAYCOM expanded into 911 and dispatch technology, rugged mobile computing, video security, access control, weapons detection, evidence capture, and other integrated solutions.

And increasingly, those technologies don't operate independently.

Today's organizations need to see what's happening, communicate quickly, get information into the hands of the right people and respond effectively. That means thinking beyond individual products and looking at how technologies can work together as part of a larger safety and communications ecosystem.

BAYCOM has evolved to help customers do exactly that.

Our customer base has evolved, too. While public safety remains central to who we are, today BAYCOM also serves schools, healthcare organizations, manufacturers, municipalities, construction companies and businesses throughout the Midwest.

The environments may be different, but the need is remarkably similar: dependable technology backed by people who understand what's at stake.

“Public safety has been part of BAYCOM’s work from the very beginning, but our story today reaches far beyond where we started. As technology and our customers’ needs have evolved, BAYCOM has evolved with them. What hasn’t changed is the responsibility we feel to the people who depend on the solutions we provide.” -Katie Miner, BAYCOM President

70 Years Later, the Promise Is the Same

From a basement radio shop to a team of approximately 100 employees, BAYCOM looks very different today than it did in 1956.

But some things haven't changed.

For 70 years, our customers have trusted us with technology they depend on to do their jobs, protect their people, and respond when something happens.

That's why our brand promise is simple: It Will Work.

It's a promise rooted in where BAYCOM started and one that continues to guide where we're going.

Technology will continue to change. New capabilities will emerge. Communications and security systems will become even more connected and intelligent. And BAYCOM will continue evolving alongside them.

As we celebrate 70 years, we're grateful for the trust that's brought us this far and excited for the opportunities ahead.
