Baycom’s Wireless Solutions Help City of Wauwatosa Win National Technology Award

Digital Cities Survey competition
The City received 2nd place nationwide in the 30,000 to 74,999 population category in the 12th annual Digital Cities Survey awards.

Green Bay, WI, (December 12, 2012) — BAYCOM, Inc., a leading provider of wireless voice, video and data solutions, partnered with the City of Wauwatosa to produce an award-winning solution for its city-wide wireless network and video surveillance system. Recently, the City of Wauwatosa was awarded second place nationwide for the most innovative IT project from the Center for Digital Government, Digital Cities Survey competition out of approximately 4,000 qualifying jurisdictions in the population category of 30,000-74,999.

“This upgrade to our network infrastructure has put us at the forefront of technology, positioning us far ahead of most other cities in terms of capabilities such as video surveillance and disaster recovery,” said Thomas Otzelberger, Manager, Information Systems, City of Wauwatosa.

The City originally hired BAYCOM to install video surveillance at critical water department sites throughout the city. After further analysis, BAYCOM saw an opportunity for additional improvement by creating a reliable and secure wireless network that connects key utilities, buildings and worksites across the city.

The creation of a unified, redundant wireless network enabled the City to get rid of leased T1 lines that transferred data and provided bandwidth. Eliminating the T1 lines has saved the City on average $18,000 per year. Another cost avoided was the use of a courier service to transport tapes from one data center to another. In total, the City has seen approximately $50,000 in annual savings and has gained $25,000 in new annual revenue from a communications tower constructed for the project.

“As the leading provider of mission critical voice, video, and data products and services throughout the Midwest, we are honored to be partners in Wauwatosa’s award-winning solution for its city,” said Steve Elias, President of BAYCOM. “Wauwatosa is a perfect example of capitalizing on the potential for city-wide wireless networks and how they can help enhance departmental efficiency and public safety.”

The City of Wauwatosa was recognized at a special awards ceremony concurrent with the National League of Cities annual conference in Boston on November 30th. This is the City’s second award this year for its city-wide wireless network and video surveillance system. In June 2012, Wauwatosa was awarded the “2012 Effective Use of Technology Award” from the Public Policy Forum.
