Who is affected by the new US DOT ruling against use of handheld cellphones, effective January 3, 2012?
As of January 3, 2012, Department of Transportation Laws changed in an attempt to curtail accidents related to distracted driving. Penalties can be up to $2,750 for drivers and up to $11,000 for employers who allow drivers to use a hand-held communications devices while driving. The hand-held cell phone ban includes:
Medium- to heavy-duty trucks and buses
Vehicles with a capacity of 16 or more passengers
Vehicles with a GVW of greater than 10,000lbs
There may be implications for small vehicles involved in interstate transportation
